Oldest Living Couple on Earth Gives Great Relationship Advice

Meet Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of North Carolina. They have been married 85 years (86 in May) and hold the Guinness World Record for the longest marriage of a living couple and get this…. Zelmyra is 101 years old and Herbert is 104.

The happily married couple teamed up with twitter this Valentine’s Day to answer some relationship questions. Check out their take on finding love, getting through hard times and more. Good read.

1. What made you realize that you could spend the rest of your lives together? Were you scared at all?
H & Z: With each day that passed, our relationship was more solid and secure.Divorce was NEVER an option – or even a thought.
2. How did you know your spouse was the right one for you?
We grew up together & were best friends before we married. A friend is for life – our marriage has lasted a lifetime
3. Is there anything you would do differently after more than 80 years of marriage?
We wouldn’t change a thing. There’s no secret to our marriage, we just did what was needed for each other & our family.
4. What is your advice to someone who is trying to keep the faith that Mr. Right is really out there?
Zelmyra: Mine was just around the corner! He is never too far away, so keep the faith – when you meet him, you’ll know.
5. What was the best piece of marriage advice you ever received?
Respect, support & communicate with each other.Be faithful, honest & true.Love each other with ALL of your heart
6. What are the most important attributes of a good spouse?
Zelmyra: A hard worker & good provider.The 1920s were hard,but Herbert wanted & provided the best for us.I married a good man!
7. What is your best Valentine’s Day memory?
Zelmyra: I cook dinner EVERY day.Herbert left work early & surprised me – he cooked dinner for me! He is a VERY good cook!
Herbert: I said that I was going to cook dinner for her & she could relax – the look on her face & clean plate made my day!
8. You got married very young – how did u both manage to grow as individuals yet not grow apart as a couple?
“Everyone who plants a seed & harvests the crop celebrates together” We are individuals, but accomplish more together.
9. What is your fondest memory of your 85-year marriage?
Our legacy: 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
10. Does communicating get easier with time? How do you keep your patience?
The children are grown, so we talk more now. We can enjoy our time on the porch or our rocking chairs – together.
11. How did you cope when you had to be physically separated for long periods of time?
Herbert: We were apart for 2 months when Z was hospitalized with our 5th child. It was the most difficult time of my life. Zelmyra’s mother helped me with the house and the other children, otherwise I would have lost my mind.
12. At the end of bad relationship day, what is the most important thing to remind yourselves?
Remember marriage is not a contest – never keep a score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win
13. Is fighting important?
NEVER physically! Agree that it’s okay to disagree, & fight for what really matters. Learn to bend – not break!
14. What’s the one thing you have in common that transcends everything else?
We are both Christians & believe in God.Marriage is a commitment to the Lord.We pray with & for each other every day.

The people from Feed the Hunger have fed millions of people and reached all the way around the world and touched the lives of these little souls. With this program, here in the United States, we can help process and pack the food that will be shipped all over the world to feed hungry children.

This ministry is also supported by runners.

They are a part of the Feed The Hunger Team.

They run to gain support to feed the children. In their running they are reaching out,

all the way to the other side of the world, to effect a child's life.

We at Antioch have some members of the

Feed The Hunger team.

Here they are ... Susanna, Judah, Amos, Mark, Cindy and Hannah.

They did a great job.

Week after week, faithfully, running and training, being strengthened by the Lord so they can be part of the outreach that feeds those hungry children.

Support for members of Team Feed the Hunger goes to help the King Himali Home in Kathmandu, Nepal. There are 25 orphaned or semi-orphaned children at this home under the care of Ms. Laxmi Tamang. Your contributions help provide the children in this home with nourishing food and an opportunity to go to school, all in a Christ centered environment. Thanks for helping us Feed the Hunger for these precious children in Nepal and loving them with more than a meal!

They did some serious running.

I asked Mark, Cindy, Hannah and Amos if they would share their running experiences with us ...

Mark about his first marathon ... When I passed a runner on his back at mile 18, being worked on by paramedics who were trying to resuscitate him from cardiac arrest, I felt two powerful emotions at the same time. First, sorrow for him. I prayed out loud for him as I ran past, and I heard the man next to me praying for him as well. Second, I felt tremendous gratitude that the Lord would let me run this race, and I asked Him to give me strength. As I trained for the 18 weeks prior to last Saturday, I did a lot of praying as I ran, and the one verse I kept repeating as I prayed was that familiar passage in Isaiah 40:31, that the Lord would help me "run and not grow weary, walk and not faint.

Cindy - I am thankful that we can run as a family and that God gave us the health and endurance to be able to do it. I started the Couch to 5K program last March, and it really worked! I have never been a runner before then and could not run a half mile when I started. I wanted to learn to run so Mark and I could run together. :) I'm so proud of him running his first marathon!

Hannah - It was an awesome experience…there were so many runners and the energy was high, which made it a lot more fun than running on a treadmill :). We ran at night, too, which was pretty cool—somehow it’s more exciting to run in the dark! The last mile was a little painful for me personally, but I finished and that’s what counts :). All in all, it was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again!

Amos - As I ran, I was amazed by how much fun I had... in the first ten miles. After that, things gradually began to seem harder. Time slowed. I could feel my energy subsiding. I started going numb in my fingers (don't ask me why).
However, it was during this time that I have my best memories now from the race. Along the road on either side people were lined up clapping, singing, and shouting support. Many people held signs saying things like "You made it to the start, you can make it to the finish," or "You're almost there!" or "Run, a zombie is behind you!"
My favorite two signs were in the last two miles. One said "Worst. Parade. Ever." The other was held by a woman on a corner. It said "Run for Jesus."
No joke, in those last two miles (and especially the final mile) it was all I could do to keep running. Walking seemed like such a relief. But it was the encouragement along the way that kept me motivated to keep running. The people cheering and clapping didn't know me. They certainly didn't have to cheer as I and four thousand others ran by. But they did cheer, and it meant the world.
I decided at that moment that I wanted to be one of those people who cheers for everyone.
(P.S. In the final yards to the finish line, seeing the faces of my friends on the sidelines and hearing them cheer was the best moment of the race. The encouragement from random strangers was nice, but the cheers from my friends were the most refreshing and motivating factor I experienced that day. And because of them I'd do it all again.)

Pastor Youcef Execution Could Come at Any Time

Iran (MNN) ― Sources in Iran say an execution order for Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has been signed.

According to Present Truth Ministries (closely connected with Nadarkhani), this is grim news. Todd Nettleton, a spokesman for Voice of the Martyrs USA , confirms the news. "Apparently, that execution order has not been delivered to his family has not been delivered to his attorneys, but the report is that it has been signed. That means that at any time, he could be executed."

Often the government will execute people without any prior notice to attorney's or family. It's also unclear whether it has been approved by the Ayatollah who is the head of the Judiciary Sadegh Larijani.

Nadarkhani was born to a Muslim family and admits that he was introduced to the teachings of Islam, but claims he never accepted the faith. That was the basis of his appeal to the High Court on the apostasy verdict.

Nettleton explains, "His reply to that is 'well no. I wasn't a practicing Muslim this execution order being signed says that the court has not approved that logic. They are saying 'yes in fact, you were a Muslim. Because you're a Christian now, you're an apostate and you'll be executed for that apostasy."

Pastor Youcef has refused to recant his faith during the three years he's been separated from his wife and two sons. His conviction and sentence has been delayed due to international pressure, according to other reports from Present Truth Ministries.

Meanwhile, on February 17, Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA) introduced a resolution denouncing Iran for its leaders' ruling of apostasy against Youcef Nadarkhani and calling for his immediate release. So far, it has the support of seven other members. Nearly 90 members of Congress previously signed a letter supporting Nadarkhani.

When asked if international pressure would be enough to intervene again, Nettleton responded, "The most important thing we can do is to pray. There are petitions you can sign. We have Pastor Youcef on PrisonerAlert.com. They can also send emails to Iranian authorities asking that he not be executed."

Given the application of the apostasy law, one would think it would have a severe 'chilling effect' on evangelism. Quite the opposite, says Nettleton. The Arab Spring and Iran's Revolution played a big role in that.

Ruthless government oppression of the protestors shook many Muslims' faith. To them, the government is the mullah, and the mullah is the government. That means, Nettleton goes on to say, that "When there is disappointment with the government or frustration with the government, it translates in people's minds to disappointment and frustration with Islam."

People are looking for an anchored Truth. "So, there's hunger for the Gospel, there's an openness for the Gospel and the Church is growing at a rate that is really mind-boggling."

Ask the Lord to uphold and sustain Youcef, his wife, and their two children. Pray that this family may soon be reunited. Pray for Youcef's legal team and all those in authority connected with this case.

Pray the Body of Christ will continue to multiply and mature despite persecution.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie

Pictured are cookies with various problems using the same dough (with flour adjustments in numbers 3 &4).

1. This cookie is done just right.

It is pictured to compare with the rest.

2. This dough was not refrigerated.

It is still good but a little flatter than it should be.

3. This dough contained too much flour and did not spread much at all. It is interesting to note that the dough looked identical to the correct dough, but was much stiffer and drier.

4. This dough had too little flour. It spread too much and didn’t bake evenly.

5. This dough was over-mixed. It had a poor color, baked flat and had a strange consistency.

6. This dough was formed too small. It was overcooked at eight minutes. It is fine to make smaller cookies, just bake them for less time.

7. This dough was formed too large. The outsides were done while the middle was too high and underdone.

8. This dough was baked in an oven 25 degrees too hot. The outside was overdone and the inside was slightly underdone.

9. This dough was baked in an oven 25 degrees too cool. It fell flat and became too crisp without much of an inside.

10. This dough was frozen when baked.

It took longer to bake and didn't cook as evenly.

To use frozen dough, set on cookie sheet at room temperature while oven is preheating, 15-20 minutes. It takes the frost off and bakes perfectly.

Just For Fun

In a delightful little town called Burlington

Don and I are new residents to Burlington North Carolina.

We are having a lovely time as we explore, finding the charm and the individuality in this whistle stop.

Think old, red brick buildings with awnings, stone pots, sprouting flowers, history-filled antique shops, and mom and pop eateries. Having lived among chain restaurants, malls and traffic this is a peaceful change.

For fun, Don and I are going to have a year long project; we are going to visit 12 mom and pop restaurants, one every month for 12 months.

We have a goal .. to find the best hot dog in town.

We have started our quest.

On a warm southern January day we drove into the historic district of Burlington.

Having been in business about 45 years,

this long standing sandwich shop is full of local residents coming back again and again to have their favorites.

What a fun place.

This is Blair, our waitress, we took her recommendation and got the chili cheese dog with the bacon.

MMM. I had never had that before and it was good.

We got the coleslaw as a side and it was fresh and crisp.

Sometimes, we're tempted to think that's the ultimate goal of parenting—controlling our children's behavior. But is it? Listen as John MacArthur answers that question . . ."

She may be sitting on the outside, but what is the condition inside her heart?

Who is she when you aren't watching?

As we recognize the condition of our children's hearts and our responses to it, we do the only thing we are equipped to do, submit to God ourselves. Pray without ceasing.

If the desire of our hearts are to be an instrument in the hand of God, to bring our children to Him, then we are on the right track.

If our ultimate desires are for our children to be obedient and perform acceptably, then we need to go back to His plan of salvation.

Our children are sinners.

When adults come to Christ we tell them again and again "you don't have to be perfect before you come to Him, it's God who gives us perfection"

So with our children, their outward behaviors are just signs of inward beliefs.

My grandson and I had a conversation when he was about 3ish. He was mad at a friend and hit him. In response to that, I tenderly drew Ethan close to me as we talked. I said "Buddy, is that the right thing to do, to hit a friend when he takes your car?"

and without any hesitation he said 'YES! it was the right thing to do" I chuckled inside and understood, to Ethan, that WAS the right thing to do. He was working from a sinners mindset.

The only way for him to be able to understand the things of godliness is for Him to have God in his heart.

God is the one that is responsible for His conversion.

We, as his family are responsible to be in submission to God, to be prayerful, to be in constant sanctification ourselves, so we can be useful vessels in these lives the Lord has given us to affect.

That little girl in the chair that is standing up in her heart,

that is a God issue. That is a prayer issue.

We need to discipline and expect obedience because we live in a society, but those acceptable behaviors do not save a child's soul. They just make them more pleasant to live with.

In the illustration of Ethan, I would not allow him to hit children. Hitting is not an acceptable, allowable, it's not an over lookable behavior, but, the real need is his hearts desire to not want to hit children.

That times TIME.

It took Ethan time to come to understand and realize the greater good and to see his actions as sinful.

We come to Christ, are saved and then blessed with His Holy Spirit. That is what enables us to do any good at at all.

God takes time with us.

That's the grace that God gives us. We are adults and we might hit with our words, lash out in anger. Yet, God is so kind to us.

He never allows that sin in our lives but instead He disciples us, patiently, line upon line, teaches us to grow in Him.

So that we can trust in Him and not our own desires.

That's what we give to our children. The same grace we are given. We are to be kind, never allowing sin but instead, discipleship and patiently, line upon line, teaching them to grow in Him.

Praying without ceasing for their salvation and that their hearts would be soft towards Him.

That takes time. It takes time to grow and mature in the Lord.

With prayer and His power we can be the useful vessels in His hand to grow children for HIM.

Don and I have adult children and we never got things completely right, we were either to far this way or to far that way, but our one consolation as we tried and prayed is that God is good and He is able to to clean up after us. As you parent, you submit to God, He is so kind to clean up after us, to give hope to our children despite our parenting attempts. It is our Lord God ... He is our hope.

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Camera Cord

I have lost the cord to my new camera.

It's not a new camera exactly, but it's what I prayed for and that the Lord provided through a sweet family in the church. I offered to pay for it but they gave it to me for free. They had an abundance and they gave.

But now, I am praying the Lord will help me find the cord. I am a blogger and picture taker. I connect one thing to another and the camera was enabling me to get back to what I love to do.

But the cord is gone. We have looked and looked, it's a small house, not to many places to look.

I recognize the answer might be no. I might not get that cord back, in which case, I will not be able to download the pictures that I took for the blog. I have so many projects going and this is stopping everything FLAT.

The other day during Bible reading, Elisa mentioned that we are all so quick to get out of our struggles. Our main goal is to pray and have faith that the Lord will solve the problem and we will be happy again.

I thought that was very insightful. It's a true perspective. I know this cord loss and further, my ability to create loss, is certainly not eternal. It's not even serious, but, it's an example of a struggle. The struggle is accepting this situation in my life with thankfulness. To not try to get out of it. I have done what I can do in this here and now. Now I have to decide where I will go from here.

I decided I will thank God for the loss of the cord. I will not try to get out of it by stressing and worrying. By praying over and over "Dear God, please help me find that cord" I will be still. I have asked God to show me what He has for me to learn through this, or if He would, just give me peace that I can trust Him with all things.

Sounds easy enough, it's just a dumb camera cord after all.

But it's a start.

It's a baby step towards fully trusting God in all circumstances in my life. To letting go of my need for happiness.

I hope this isn't to simplistic. I know folks have REAL LIVE struggles and this cord thing is insignificant compared to them, but there is a bit of truth in this too, even the real struggles, the really hard things are meant to be shared with the Lord and we are to thank Him in ALL things.

Maybe the Lord is hoping for us to just hold His hand and wait. To look at Him with trust. Not to run for relief. Maybe the answer is ... as Paul writes ...

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, Romans 1:18

... something bigger then we can see with these saline eyes ... my hope is not in the relief to my struggle but rather in my fellowship with our God and Father. Our happiness, or joy will be complete in Him.

I can attest to that. I have lost a lot in the past few years. It's been tough, but I have never felt more loved or closer to the Father then I have since going through those struggles. God put me in a place where I did not get to have what I wanted. Even though what I wanted certainly appeared to be good and healthy things!
The answer was no and that was that. With His strength I was enabled to accept the things I could not change.
I still hope I find that cord. If I do I will let you know, but if I don't, I will be disappointed, but it will not be what defines me. My losses, even the things that would have been good and healthy to have, will not determine my life.

By His enabling grace .. I will thank Him in all things.

My life will be defined by His grace.

None of us mean to hurt our children, our hearts desire is their good. Sometimes we parent without realizing what the results of our actions are. I know I look at this list and cringe because I see some things I have done but never want to do again. I am also thankful that love covers a multitude of sin and that God's most generous, amazing grace sees us all through our weaknesses.

1. OUT-LOUD SHAMING The dynamic: This is the "shame on you" that comes from belittling. It is any message communicated out loud that says, "Something is wrong with you."

The effects: Negative view of self, even self-hatred.

2. FOCUS ON PERFORMANCE The dynamic: How people act is more important than who they are. Love and acceptance are earned by doing or not doing certain things.

The effects: Perfectionism, or giving up without trying; view of God as more concerned with how you act than who you are; cannot ask for help; high need for the approval of others.

3. MANIPULATION The dynamic: Relationships and behaviors are manipulated by very powerful unspoken rules. Yet the unspoken rules communicate these and other shaming messages.

Coding: Messages are sent through a verbal code that others are supposed to decode. "Don't you think it would be better this way?" means, "I want you to do it this way."

Triangling: This means to send a message to someone through another person, instead of delivering it directly.

The effects: Great "radar" - the ability to pick up tension in situations and relationships; ability to decode messages; talking about people instead of to them; difficulty trusting people.

4. IDOLATRY The dynamic: The "god" served by the shame-based relationship system is an impossible-to-please judge. It is a god invented to enforce the performance standard.

The effects: Distorted image of God; high level of anxiety; high need to control thoughts, feelings and behaviors of others.

5. PREOCCUPATION WITH FAULT AND BLAME The dynamic: Reaction is swift and furious toward the one who fails to perform the way the system deems fit. Responsibility and accountability are not the issues here: Fault and blame are the issues.The shame-based system wants a confession in order to know whom to shame.

The effects: The sense that if something is wrong or someone is upset you must have caused it; a high need to be punished for or to pay for mistakes in order to feel good about yourself; difficulty forgiving self.

6. OBSCURED REALITY The dynamic: Members are to deny any thought that is different than those of people in authority. Anything that has the potential to shame those in authority is ignored or denied. Interaction with people and places outside the system threatens the order of things. Consequently, you can't find out what "normal" is. Problems are denied, and therefore they remain.

The effects: Out-of-touch with feelings, needs, thoughts; ignoring your "radar" because you are being "too critical;" feel like no one else understands you; threatened by opinions that differ from yours; suspicious or afraid of others.

7. UNBALANCED INTERRELATEDNESS The dynamic: Either under involved or over involved with each other. Consequently, rules take the place of people. There is no relationship structure in which to learn about behaviors and consequences. People find out about life alone and by accident.

The effects: Fear of being deserted; high need for structure; a sense that if there is a problem, you have to solve it; feeling selfish for having needs; putting up boundaries that keep safe people away; feelings of guilt when you haven't done anything wrong.

When evaluating the emotional foundation the shame-based systems create, it is clear that honesty and trust are undermined in the relationship. This can also hinder a person's maturing in a relationship with God.

None of us are going to be perfect parents. Our children are not going to be perfect people. The point of this post is not to add more guilt, becasue frankly, who needs more guilt? But rather just a snapshot of thoughts and ideas to consider and take before the Lord. He is so patient with us and will parent US. He doesn't shame us, instead He is the ultimate Good Shepherd. His agenda is His Father's and His father's agenda is fellowship with His children, His agenda is love.

My Husband Is an Overbearing Jerk … and I’m a Pouty Little Snot

When did our culture decide that marriage was supposed to be light and fluffy?

I have friends who have been devastated by divorce. Divorce is heartbreaking, and all the more when one of the parties is blindsided by the decision of the other to give up and end the marriage.

This seems to be happening more and more. Things get hard, marriage stops being fun, life gets serious, issues arise, and someone decides they do not want to work at it and they just leave.

A few weeks ago I was speaking to a friend who said she knew 10 couples who were headed toward divorce. In each case it was because the wife decided it wasn't worth the hassle to work at it. She'd had enough and she was out of there.

I struggle to comprehend how a woman can give up on her family without fighting for it. Actually, I get angry. It seems like such an unbelievable display of selfishness. If you and your husband are fighting and having problems, don't think you are alone in your struggles. All marriages suffer and have problems—all marriages. In the situations I have observed, there is no abuse. The individuals just refused to work through the problems they were having with the spouse given to them by God.

When did our society decide that marriage was supposed to be all light and fluffy? Marriage is hard; marriage is where life gets real. And each of us should have realized that going into it ... better or worse, richer or poorer ... remember?

I have had many women assume that my husband is perfect because it appears to them that our marriage is so good. I laugh and tell them that our marriage is good, but not because my husband is perfect. He is an overbearing jerk. And I am a pouty little snot. But we know this about each other and we work at marriage.

In our home we recognize sin for just what it is: sin. And often, a moment's frustration is all it takes for us to slip into our sin nature. Hubby's moments of frustration slip him into "overbearing jerk"—and he knows it. My moments of frustration slip me into "pouty little snot"—and I know it.

This from the parents who have been known to tell their children they are being "selfish little heathens."

Do we point these things out to be mean and ugly? No, we do it to identify sin and snap each other into recognition of that sin. We know that because we are most comfortable at home; it is there that our sin nature rears its ugly head the most. I recognize I need someone to help me tame the beast within.

Is it always easy to hear about it when I'm being a pouty little snot? No. But hey, my hubby loves me and he needs to help me to be a better person.

Are there times when he knows that I'm having a bad day and he needs to just let a problem go? Of course—neither of us is looking for trouble!

As moms, we spend our days teaching our children that the world does not revolve around them and they have to learn to get along well with their friends and siblings. We constantly remind them to extend grace to others, to realize others are not always cruel on purpose. Maybe we should remind ourselves the same thing when it comes to our relationship with our husband.

So, if you have had recurring thoughts of disappointment and anger toward your husband and you are getting fed up, please allow me to mother you a bit ...

The world does not revolve around you. You need to work at getting along with your husband. You need to extend grace to your husband. Your husband is not being mean on purpose; sometimes he just doesn't think.

Marriage is a covenant relationship and God made it that way because He realized that, left to our own desires, we would want to walk away. But a covenant is a commitment, so we must stick it out and work at it.

Working at it pounds some of the stubbornness out of us: My husband is becoming less and less of an overbearing jerk, and I am becoming less and less of a pouty little snot.

Last night when I asked Hubby if we were going to have a date night this Friday he said, "I don't know. Do you want to go out on a date with an overbearing jerk?"

"Sure," I said. "Because you are my overbearing jerk and I love you!"

Rule of Thirds

Perhaps the most well know principle of photographic composition is the

‘Rule of Thirds‘.

The “Rule of Thirds” one of the first things that budding digital photographers learn about in classes on photography and rightly so as it is the basis for well balanced and interesting shots.

I will say right up front however that rules are meant to be broken and ignoring this one doesn’t mean your images are necessarily unbalanced or uninteresting. However a wise person once told me that if you intend to break a rule you should always learn it first to make sure your breaking of it is all the more effective!

What is the Rule of Thirds?

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. As follows.

As you’re taking an image you would have done this in your mind through your viewfinder or in the LCD display that you use to frame your shot.

With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image.

Not only this – but it also gives you four ‘lines’ that are also useful positions for elements in your photo.

The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.

In addition to the above picture of the bee where the bee’s eye becomes the point of focus here are some of examples:

Another Rule of Thirds Example

In this image I’ve purposely placed the head of my subject on one of the intersecting points – especially his eyes which are a natural point of focus for a portrait. His tie and flower also take up a secondary point of interest.

In this shot I’ve placed the subject along a whole line which means she is considerably off center and therefore creating an additional point of interest. Placing her right in the center of the frame could have resulted in an ‘awkward’ shot.

In a similar way a good technique for landscape shots is to position horizons along one of the horizontal lines also as I’ve done with the following shot (I’ll let you imagine the lines).

Using the Rule of Thirds comes naturally to some photographers but for many of us takes a little time and practice for it to become second nature.

In learning how to use the rule of thirds (and then to break it) the most important questions to be asking of yourself are:

What are the points of interest in this shot?
Where am I intentionally placing them?

Once again – remember that breaking the rule can result in some striking shots – so once you’ve learnt it experiment with purposely breaking it to see what you discover.

Lastly – keep the rule of thirds in mind as you edit your photos later on. Post production editing tools today have good tools for cropping and reframing images so that they fit within the rules. Experiment with some of your old shots to see what impact it might have on your photos

Hints for Quiet Time

Having a quiet time with the Lord every day is absolutely essential if you expect to grow spiritually. But you have to plan it. It won't "just happen." We're all much too busy. Early morning is best, and there are plenty of scriptural precedents for that (Jesus rose "a great while before day"; the psalmist said, "In the morning shalt Thou hear my voice").

If you meet the Lord before you meet anybody else, you'll be "pointed in the right direction" for whatever comes. God knows how difficult it is for some to do this, and if you have a reason you can offer Him why early morning won't work, I'm sure He'll help you to find another time. Sometimes the children's afternoon nap time can be quiet time for a mother. At any rate, plan the time. Make up your mind to stick with it. Make it short to begin with--fifteen minutes or so, perhaps. You'll be surprised at how soon you'll be wanting more.

Take a single book of the Bible. If you're new at this, start with the Gospel of Mark. Pray, first, for the Holy Spirit's teaching. Read a few verses, a paragraph, or a chapter. Then ask, What does this passage teach me about:

(1) God,

(2) Jesus Christ,

(3) the Holy Spirit,

(4) myself,

(5) sins to confess or avoid,

(6) commands to obey,

(7) what Christian love is?

Keep a notebook. Write down some of your special prayer requests with the date. Record the answer when it comes. Note, also, some of the answers you've found to the above questions, or anything else you've learned. Tell your children, your spouse, your friends some of these things. That will help you to remember them. You'll be amazed at what a difference a quiet time will make in your life.

Abeles and Lundgrens spent a rainy, fall afternoon together.

Mia made homemade cappuccinos.

They had a beautiful foam. Sugar free and flavored with Mia's amazing vanilla.

Chocolate imported from England grated for the final touch.

While we waited for the caramel to melt on the double boiler

we played games,

drew fall scenes, all the while listening to Disney classic music.

Finally, the caramel was hot and melted.

Into the caramel went the apples,

twirling them around and around till they were fully covered.

We had some great dippers.

We had enthusiastic eaters. MMM good.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

Leeland has a great song called Follow You. I listen to it often. I guess I listen to a lot of Leeland.

This song is a prayer and the heart of the prayer is the Christian giving all of themselves to the heart of God .. which is compassion and love.

And I will follow you into the arms of the broken

I will meet the needs of the poor and the needy.

Something that occurs to me often, is who are the poor and the needy?

Our Christian culture has become vitalized in our efforts to care for the poor, starving children living in other countries.

I am so glad the heart of the Christian is loving those starving souls.

The group the Lord puts on my heart are the poor and needy here in our community.

We have lots of folks that are living empty sad lives. Their stomachs are full but their soul is empty.

Those folks can be found in surprising places .. in the poor part of town and even in our own church.

We ourselves can become the broken, the poor and the needy. Hurt, lonely, disillusioned.

We can see our sisters and brothers that need ...

That is when the miracle of our wonderful Jesus comes.

If I could sing .. I would sing out how great He is.

His spirit can move and change things.

His presence and His spirit heals and restores.

He fills hearts and stomachs.

I love that we can be part of that plan of His.
We can be filled by Him, renewed and hopeful.

When we are full of Him or even as we are being filled of Him we can be Jesus for those hurting souls.

We can follow Him into the arms of the broken, follow Him and meet the needs of the poor and the needy.

Shallow End

Elisa and I talk about a lot of different things. We go from shallow end of the conversation pool .. "What do you think of these shoes with this skirt?" to the deep end of the conversation pool "The practice of giving thanks ... eucharisteo ... this is the way we practice the presence of God .." (1000 gifts)

And it's fun to have both. Needful actually. To much at one end or the other is unbalanced.

Since my blog tends to lean towards the deep end of the pool I thought it was time for a little shallow time.

As I was listening to this online I knew I was going to be one of the bad figs.

I know my fruit is nothing but filty rags in the sight of God.

It occured to me that yes, I am indeed the bad fruit and deserve destruction

but because of our Precious Savior ..

dear sisters, because of our Precious Savior, we get to be counted with the good figs.

we get to be built up, planted and given a heart that will return to Him because He is our God.

Because He has chosen to make it so.

Because HE is so good to US.

We are His good figs because the blood of Jesus makes it so.

Rejoice always,

test everything;
